What these guys are telling you is changing habits/routine.
Don't reject the idea of AA out of hand.AA might not be right for you,but it is a change of routine in a different and positive direction.
It can fill in until you can find something else.Get use to the idea there are no replacments.Just remember, that the fun you use to have drinking is gone forever wether you continue to drink or not.
If you stop drinking it will be better, but it will never be the same.If you keep drinking it will be worse and it will still never be the same.
Just remember, life sucking sober is still better than life sucking drunk.
Thats a fact of life like the sun coming up every day.

AA is one of the most depressing places you would ever want to go.

You could try revolving more activities in the morning and going to bed earlier, instead of closing a bar down with friends. Amazing the money you save right there.

I guess the obvious answer is just don't keep alcohol around the house. I had to take 20 AA classes for a drunk-driving charge back in the 80's, only went twice. They try to break you down to hit rock bottom, then build you back up through prayer. Almost cult-like. Many people need this, it wasn't for me.

As others have said, find something else to do with your time instead of sitting around the house and drinking. I highly recommend exercise - specifically, weight training. Gradually improve your diet. Set goals for yourself and achieve them. You aren't as likely to drink when you just worked out and you know that drinking is terrible for your health. Exercise and healthy diet also does wonders for depression and self esteem, especially when you really notice the changes in your body. Good luck

Its supposed to be.You don't go there because you just cured cancer. You go there to listen to other drunks and losers trying to remind yourself and each other why they/you need to stop drinking. Its coming to terms with your weakness.People that go are not there because they are weak. They go to get stronger.

Alchohol cravings can be curbed with sweets..I like chocolate

Go to a few AA meetings , you don`t have to dive in head first , just go and listen..You will meet some good people .

Go to the library a read some books on alcholism..

Exercise , get your body moving...If you have stopped drinking you will be motivated and have alot of extra time, so use that extra energy...What i have done is basically exchanged my alchohol addiction to an exercise addiction...I have to . Thats how i`m wired ,i guess

When your addiction starts to fuck with your sobriety , such as driving past a favorite drinking spot and telling you to just go have a drink ..Have a mental picture of some bad things you did while drunk and keep running it through your head, until the urge subsides..THERE ARE ALOT OF TRIGGERS OUT THERE WAITING TO CATCH YOU OFF GUARD...Have your mental pictures ready ..

Get yourself a Mantra, I use "stay sober , get stonger " thoughout the day agd especially when i`m working out..

Right now i`m at the stage where the chemicals in my brain have started to recover and balance out from 20 years of drinking..At least thats what im told.

Things are looking and feeling great for me right now and they will for you too..

I have been sober since August 7,2007...ITS AMAZING

good luck

pat,one of the better answers ive seen...i'll add one thing....get out of your own head and focus on givin someone else a helpin hand, every day....dont focus on what you cant do,keep your mind on what you CAN do.....i cant tell you the freedom i felt once the compulsion to drink left me,(6 months)...pat said it all,a horrible day sober is wonderful compared to a day drunk......i'll leave you with the words that a bunch of old drunks would say to me when i first joined aa..hang in there til yer ass falls off...'keep the continue'
